Aeration of the lawn is a service that seems to be skipped over by many companies, even though it may be one of the best things you can do for your lawn.
Why? – You have probably heard the age old saying that you don't want to build a house on sand because the foundation is the most important part. Well surprise, surprise, your lawn is not so different. The best way to have a healthy lawn is to have healthy soil. With the combination of foot traffic, lawn equipment and a build up of thatch, the soil that your grass is trying to grow in can become packed down and hard.
A hard compact soil doesn't allow oxygen, nutrients and most importantly water, to penetrate to the roots of the grass.
How? – The best way to alleviate soil compaction is to use what is called an aerator. These can be pulled behind a mower or rode on as a self contained machine. Either way the concept is the same, the machine stabs a hollow tube into the ground, usually 1 to 3 inches deep. As the tube is removed from the ground the center "plug" of grass comes with it. This plug is then left on the surface of the lawn to breakdown and return to the soil.
When? – In our experience the best time to aerate is early fall, usually before the end of September. Aerating at this time provides ample time for the grass to fill back in before slowing down through the months of October and November. This time coordinates well with an early fall weed treatment if you have your lawn on a treatment schedule.
If you would like to have your lawn aerated, or you don't know if your lawn needs it and you would like to have one of our pro's take a look at it, give us a call today.
Since aeration has already opened up the soil this is a great time to over-seed your lawn as well!
